HMS Vanguard SSBN

The Dyers Company first established an affiliation with the Royal Navy in 1987.

Royal Charter

We are honoured to be the first City Livery Company to be granted a supplemental Charter from His Majesty King Charles III in 2023.

The Dyers & Dyeing

Early history
The earliest records of dyeing go back to 5,000 BC in Turkey and the earliest mention of dyeing in England was by the Venerable Bede in 731 AD but the earliest record of dyers as a guild in London is 1188 AD.  The Guild of Dyers was granted rights of self regulation in 1311 but it was not until 1471 that King Henry VI granted the Dyers’ their first Royal Charter, changing the guild into an incorporated body and granting powers of search and fines for poor quality dyeing in London.  Subsequent charters and byelaws were granted until the current one granted by Queen Anne in 1704.

Diversity and Inclusion Statement

The Dyers’ Company is committed to being an inclusive employer and supporter of greater diversity among its membership. The Company has a ‘no tolerance’ attitude to any form of discrimination based on age,  disability, gender, sexual orientation, race, religion or belief.  The aim is to foster a culture where everyone is treated with consideration, respect and courtesy.

Queen’s Gurkha Signals

The Queen’s Gurkha Signals are the Dyers’ most recent affiliation, which we were honoured to establish in 2015, especially given the story behind our affiliation.

The Norwich School

The Dyers’ relationship with Norwich School dates back to the 1940s, and was the result of a devastating wartime air raid.  On the night of the 27th June 1942, German bombers attacked the Cathedral, and owing to its proximity 36 incendiary bombs fell on the School, setting light to several buildings. The Head Master and boys tackled fires in the Physics Laboratory, bicycle shed and Manual Instruction Room. Six firebombs set fire to the ceiling of the arcade and although three stirrup pumps were used, the fire service had to put it out. The school’s lodge was not so lucky; it was also hit while the Head Master and his pupils were tackling the other fires.  A wartime report in The National Archives records how the Grammar School was “saved by the energy and courage of the Head Master and boys (fortunately it was not holiday time)”.

Education

In common with other London Livery Companies, the Dyers are proud to be associated with a number of schools.

The Livery

Unlike most other Livery Companies the Dyers’ Company does not have a Master, but instead has two Wardens:  The Prime Warden and the Renter Warden.  Each is a 12 month term of office, with the holder elected annually in October.
