Support for universities
Our support for universities and further education goes back a long way, but some of our relationships are relatively new.
Leeds University
Our support for Leeds University goes back to the nineteenth century and the Dyers’ Company nominates a member to sit on the university’s Court. Our support was historically supplying dyeing equipment to the university’s Department of Colour Chemistry. Our current support funds student places.
City, University of London
Our support goes back a long way and the Dyers’ Company nominates a member of the Company to sit on the Universty’s Court. Historically we gave prizes, but we now give bursaries to undergraduates, regardless of the subject studied. Our preference is to give bursaries to students from the State Schools that we support, and we typically support around five undergraduates from St Saviour’s & St Olave’s Girls School annually.
City & Guilds Institute
The Dyers’ Company was one of the founding Livery Companies of the Institute and we supported courses in dyeing. As the dyeing industry moved north, demand for the courses dwindled and ceased. The Institute now match-funds our grant to the City & Guilds Art School, which is now a separate organisation.
City & Guilds Art School
We now support up to four students at the School with bursaries.
Heriot-Watt University
Originally the Scottish College of Textiles, it is know the Borders campus of Heriot-Watt University, we have supported them in different ways. One of our past Prime Wardens, David Blackburn, was awarded an honorary doctorate by the College and another past Prime Warden, Professor Roger Wardman, was Head of School there.
Royal School of Needlework
We have supported the School for many years.
De Montfort University
We have for some time awarded prizes for textile design and made other grants.
Other universities and colleges
We also support Middlesex University, Edinburgh College of Art and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.
